SYBC: A Brief History
South Yorkshire Boat Club traces its beginnings to 8 December 1966, when a group of boating enthusiasts met at the Salutation Hotel in Doncaster. Their shared ambition was to create a club that welcomed anyone with an interest in boating. Several possible sites were considered — Strawberry Island, Stainforth, Bramwith, Sprotborough, and Heck — but it was Heck that ultimately became home.
Building the Club (1967–1968)
In the summer of 1967, work began on the chosen site with the help of a second‑hand dredger, purchased for just £50.
Two former council prefabs were acquired to form the first version of the clubhouse.
A £2,000 loan from Tetley’s Brewery enabled the creation of the club’s first bar — a feature that quickly became a social hub.
At the first General Meeting on 26 April 1968 at the Rockingham Arms, the Secretary reminded members that the club was founded to welcome all who enjoyed boating, urging everyone to protect the harmony and spirit of the new community.
Early Adventures
The club’s first organised cruise took place in September 1968, heading to Haddersley Flood Lock. This was followed by the first club visit to the Boat Show in January 1969 — the beginning of a long tradition of shared trips and events.
A Perfect Location
Over the decades, SYBC has enjoyed countless memorable journeys. Its position at Heck offers excellent access to:
The northern and midlands canal networks
Wider cruising routes
And for some members, even the North Sea
Today, the club continues to thrive as a friendly, welcoming community for boaters of all kinds — just as its founders intended.
